Nintendo does an about face; releases Pokedex app for iOS

Pokédex app on iTunes Japan; the sign of what’s to come?

Now here’s something that you don’t see every day; above is an official Pokédex app for iOS (iPhone/iPad) by none other than the Big N itself – Nintendo! Though listed as being published by “The Pokémon Company,” the app is actually made by Creatures Inc. – the main creators of the Pokémon games and a subsidiary of Nintendo.

Nintendo’s president, Satoru Iwata has in the past made it abundantly clear that Nintendo would only be developing titles for their own hardware, much to the ire of fans of various Nintendo properties that would love to play as their favorite characters without necessarily going the emulator route. The significance of the app is not so much that the people of Japan can now buy an interactive encyclopedia of Pokémon from the Black and White versions of the game, but that Nintendo has actually done what they said they had no interest of pursuing: building software for non-Nintendo hardware.

Cult of Mac reported that this doesn’t necessarily mean that the Pokédex app will even make it to West; and it’s still way too soon to start making any kind of assumptions but you will forgive us for getting a little bit excited at the prospect of one day soon seeing a Super Mario Bros. Collection on iPad or the original Legend of Zelda on your iPhone (hell we’ll take it on any mobile platform really).
