Oh Japan, there are times when the things you do make me giggle like a 14-year-old. And then there are times where you blow my mind with something that may seem all kinds of silly but really just make sense. This is one of those times.

For the ninth year, Japanese adult satellite network (read: porn), Paradise TV ran a Jerry Lewis like telethon raising money for AIDS research and awareness. Titled the 24 Hour TV: Eroticism Saves the Earth, the telethon gave subscribers a chance to pledge donations, bid on the drawers of their favorite AV starlets (some reportedly fetched as much as ¥30,000), and even get very hands on (like the self-identified 33-year-old virgin that paid touch some breasts).

Whether you agree with the methods of Paradise TV’s fund raiser or not, it is worth mentioning that Japan is facing a crisis tackling the spread of HIV and AIDS. Last year, Japan’s Ministry of Health reported over 1500 new cases of HIV and 453 new cases of AIDS; in the end there is a point behind all the madness.
