Gonzo’s Pro Tip: If you have anti-virus software don’t download new stuff from a link

I figure it’s pretty safe to say, that if you listen to the Noisecast or read this blog you probably have pretty decent anti-virus software, and hopefully you opted for some of the awesome freeware out there like Microsoft Security Essentials.

However we all have less technologically inclined friends and family and this is a Pro Tip to send their way. It seems that there was been a worm crawling through the Twitterverse that uses a goog.le to redirect you to a phony Anti-Virus site and says you should download their service, which is actually a virus.

It really shouldn’t be that big of a deal because most anti-virus software should detect it’s maliciousness before hand, but I can’t tell you how many computers I’ve had to scrub because someone downloaded something like this and infected their computer. So use this as a memo for the technotarded in your life. DON’T DOWNLOAD ANTI-VIRUS FROM STRANGE WEBSITES!

Now don’t say gonzorider never did anything nice for you.

  1. MSE: Best anti-virus software for Windows, hands down. Anyone that says otherwise is either an idiot or a fucking idiot. Take your pick.

  2. Just cleared two computers of the same thing. One was called Memory Optimizer, which insisted that the laptop was missing it's hard drive and RAM errors prevented the task manager from being opened, as well as not letting thumb drives be accessed. Malwarebytes in safe mode cleared it.

The other was my Dad, who now has MSE who downloaded something called Personal Security Sentinel, and I used Malwarebytes as well.
