Fresh off of a two year tour for their extremely successful sophomore release, <i><b>A Beautiful Lie<\/b><\/i>, they returned to Los Angeles to record a third album and document the process on film<sup>2<\/sup> &#8230;only to find themselves in the middle of a war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Thirty Seconds To Mars<\/b> had sold well over 3.5 million copies of <i><b>A Beautiful Lie<\/b><\/i><i> <\/i>and, when they inquired about their royalties, discovered they were not going to paid a dime and, in fact, they were still in debt to EMI for nearly three million dollars. <b>Thirty Seconds To Mars<\/b> approached EMI wanting to either revisit the contract or be released from it. In response, their own record label sued them for 30 million dollars, essentially telling Jared, Shannon and Tomo to shut up and record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faced with this insanity, they made the decision to stand their ground and fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From that moment on, the documentary became something else, it became <i><b>Artifact<\/b><\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Time to escape<br>The clutches of a name<br>No, this is not a game<br>It&#8217;s just a new beginning<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&#8217;t believe in fate<br>But the bottom line, it&#8217;s time to pay<br>You know you&#8217;ve got it coming<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is war<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><\/p>\n<cite>&#8211; \u201cEscape\u201d, <i><b>This Is War<\/b><\/i><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Escape\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/v27MWBnGfM8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><i><b>Artifact<\/b><\/i> is, as the name suggests, a witness to an historic event, the transformation of EMI, and the making of an album, <i><b>This Is War<\/b><\/i>, both from the band&#8217;s uniquely privileged perspective. It includes a very accurate, clear explanation of how the music industry really works and insights from former employees of the upper echelon at EMI as well as more than a few industry insiders, like journalist Neil Strauss and musicians, Serj Tankian (<b>System of a Down<\/b>), Amanda Palmer (<b>The Dresden Dolls<\/b>, accomplished solo artist), and Damian Kulash, lead singer of <b>Okay Go<\/b>, not so coincidentally, a former Capital\/EMI band as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You do not have to be a fan of <b>Thirty Seconds To Mars<\/b> to watch this documentary. It is invaluable as a behind-the-scenes window into the inner workings of a major music label during the economic downturn and the thoughts and opinions on the past and the future of the music industry from the interviewees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fans will enjoy this candid look at one of their favorite bands and will be able to see not only the birth of <i><b>This Is War<\/b><\/i>, but the genesis of the recently released fourth album <a href=\"http:\/\/www.friedyoda.com\/noisecast\/2013\/06\/thirty-seconds-to-mars-emotionally-charged-love-lust-faith-dreams-album-review\/\"><i><b>Love, Lust, Faith + Dreams<\/b><\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone who watches this will gain a new respect for this trio. The best way to describe them is as an art project, Jared&#8217;s own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/30-seconds-to-mars\/70349\">words<\/a>. Listening to their albums, I hear a common thread running through them, nothing you need to realize or know to enjoy the music, but it is there just the same.
