It’s code name is Kal-El, yes, The man of steel and the last son of Krypton. NVIDIA showed the chip beating a Core 2 Duo in Coremark which is noteworthy but pretty ‘meh’.

The chip is said to support display resolutions higher than common sense, with NVIDIA demoing it pushing 2560×1600. Kal-El apparently also brings support for NEON, there’s a 12-core GPU, but, like the Tegra 2, it won’t be a unified shader architecture design. For all this baba-juice, the launch timeframe is… um… impressive. NVIDIA promises Tegra 3 tablets by August of this year and smartphones at the end of the year. Considering we’re just starting to see Tegra 2 devices ship, yippee ki yay I guess?

More intriguing is the report from the most recent earnings call by NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsuan that unveiled a Windows ARM port and suggestions that the Tegra line could be making its way to traditional notebooks. This should be fun.

Via [Engadget]

NVIDIA unveils 1.5 GHz quad-core Tegra 3, targets tablets in August and smartphones later this year.
